NUST Intercollegiate Math Contest, 2019

The first “NUST intercollegiate Math Contest” was successfully held on 22nd April 2019 in the assembly hall of College of Engineering, National University of Science and Technology. The event was organised by the department of Mathematics and Statistics.

The contest was open for all students wide across all universities and colleges in Oman. Its primary objective was to promote interest in Mathematics among students and to identify intellectual students in the field of Mathematics with a unique competitive platform where they can prove themselves and show their potentials.

Students from various colleges/universities across Oman participated in the competition which included Sohar University, GUtech, Nizwa University, Middle East College, International College of Engineering and Management and Modern College of Business and Science.

The contest started with the inaugural address by Professor Syed Mohammed Rizwan, Head of department followed by the first round, written test of 15 minutes duration. The second round was a keyboard round where each team got a chance to select a number displayed onscreen and the question was displayed based on the choice of each team. Four teams with low scores were eliminated and remaining six teams contested for the third and fourth rounds. The third round was a buzzer round where a question was displayed and the team who pressed the buzzer first got the chance to answer first. The final round was rapid fire round in which each team was given a chance to answer maximum number of questions. 

Honorable Dean, Professor Dr Ahmed Al Bulushi motivated all the participants through his address to the gathering and declared the winning team. German University of Technology bagged the first place by scoring 135 points followed by Nizwa University team who secured the second position with a score of 75 points and College of Engineering, National University of Science and Technology secured the 3rd position with the score of 70 points.
