Symposium on Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data May 14h, 2018

The Symposium on Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data is organized by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Caledonian (University) College of Engineering under the patronage of HH. Dr. Fahad Aljulanda Majid  Al Said, Assistant Secretary General for Innovation Development, The Research Council Oman on 14th May 2018. The event is sponsored by Oman Arab Bank and Infocomm. The Key Note speech on “Smart cities: Concepts, International Examples and Local Initiatives” was delivered by Dr Ali Amur Ali Al Shidani, Director of Research Centers and ICT Research, The Research council Oman.

Mr Ali Al Mahruqi, Head of Electrical and Computer Engineering department of Caledonian College of Engineering gave the welcome address. In his welcome address, Mr. Ali mentioned that the symposium provided an avenue for interaction among academic as well as industrial sectors and to explore research avenues in the field of Information Technology apart from creating awareness to the students and faculty the research potential in the theme topic of the symposium.

Mr. Ali thanked the chief guest, the key note speaker and all invited speakers and delegates for their participation in the symposium. Mr Ali also conveyed his special thanks to the college Dean, Professor (Dr) Ahmed Hassan Al Balushi for his vision, guidance, support and encouragement in organizing the event today. Mr Ali further mentioned that the symposium is part of the research plan of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department which aims to enhance the research capacity of the department, expose staff and students to the latest research in Internet of Things, Big Data and to promote the Department and the College as a Research Centre.

The Symposium covered the following six topics during its Technical Session: ‘Cellular IoT-Technologies, Features, and Benefits’, ‘Big Data and Predictive Analysis’, ‘Supporting Big Data from the sky’, ‘IoT-Advanced Data Analytics and Machine Learning’, ‘IoT-Opportunities and challenges for engineering students to envision real world scenarios’,  and ‘Potential for Big Data to address Higher Education challenges’. The delegates and participants evinced their keen interest in the topics by way of proactive participation during question and answer session under each topic.

The event was attended by around 150 professionals, and students  from academia and industry . The vote of thanks was given by Mr Ramakrishna kumar, Dy HOD of the department.
