Entrepreneurship Fair 2017

Caledonian College of Engineering hosted its fourth annual Entrepreneurship Fair, 2017 from 13- 14th November at their Al Hail Campus under the patronage of Mr. Tariq bin Sulaiman Al Farsi, CEO- Al Raffd. This event saw coming together of Higher Education Institutions, Venture Capitalists, Banks, and government SME support agencies to share the support and services they offer for graduate startups.

Dr Ahmed Hassan Balushi, Dean Caledonian College of Engineering highlighted Caledonian College’s commitment in creating the entrepreneurial culture and roll out budding entrepreneurs with sustainable business ideas. Professor Vallavaraj, in his overview of the Entrepreneurship Fair hailed the works of governmental and private entities in supporting entrepreneurship initiatives and elaborated upon the role of micro and small businesses in strengthening the economy.

Mr Tariq Sulaiman Al Farsi, CEO – Al Rafd in his keynote speech highlighted upon the importance of graduate entrepreneurship and the support mechanism offered by Rafd and government to startups under the wise leadership and directives of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said. He commended the initiatives of Caledonian College as contribution to the nation’s 47th National Day.

Caledonian College announced the launch of Entrepreneurship Club in partnership with SME Development Fund. The Entrepreneurship Club is receiving great popularity at Caledonian College with its number of members touching 140 already. Mr Marwan Nasser announced the activities that the club will host in the coming months.

The opening session was packed with very interesting and informative panel discussion with participation from Ms Badri Al Jadedi of Al Raffd Fund, Mr Mohammad Al Issai of National Bank of Oman, Mr Nasr Al Nabhani and Ms Shifa Al Ansari of SME Development Fund each of the panelist presented the financial and technical support offered to startups. The National Bank of Oman hosts the Business Idea competitions and offers attractive Startup Funds. The most sustainable Business Idea gets awarded with a cash Prize. Mr Nasr Al Nabhani noted that the future subsidy will be granted to business in Manufacturing and urged the graduates to consider that route.

Mr Rashid Al Hindasi from International Maritime College, Sohar, Dr Anna Jurcic from Modern College of Business and Science, Dr Farzaneh Yarahmadi and Mr Mohammad Wahish Hashim from University of Bureimi shared their perspectives and Best Practices in teaching Entrepreneurship. Ths discussion revolved around the challenges faced by tutors in getting students interested in considering entrepreneurship as their first career choice and how they overcome it.

Day 2 saw coming together of exciting innovative Business ideas. Nine teams participated in this competition. Mr Marwan Nasser’s Shipping and Logistics Business idea was well appreciated by the panelists and stood first.

Eight students showcased their Businesses at the Fair. Ms Ayesha was identified by the national Bank of Oman representatives and invited for mentoring support.
