MSc. Maintenance Management

Attaining the highest levels of professionalism in plant and asset maintenance
 

Maintenance management has developed into a significant strategy in today’s modern and competitive business environments. It addresses the pressing need for development of top level maintenance strategies and plans for large-scale asset management, plant facilities and utilities.

Programme

This MSc programme is designed to impart skills and knowledge regarding modern maintenance strategies (such as condition-based maintenance and computerised maintenance systems) to professionals engaged in public and private sectors. The objective of the MSc in Maintenance Management is to provide the necessary knowledge at a senior management level for developing strategies and expertise in maintenance management.

Duration

This programme is designed to be taken in flexible mode to suit both fresh graduates and working professionals.

  • Part-time; Minimum 2½ years ( 4 semesters of taught modules and a dissertation )

Exit Award

Students who successfully complete this programme will be eligible for either an internationally recognised Postgraduate Diploma (after successfully completing all taught modules of 120 credits ) or Master of Science in Maintenance Management (after successfully completing the project in the fifth semester) awarded by Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, UK.

Career Opportunities

This programme is designed to be beneficial to working professionals from industries and other public and private organisations as well as new graduates who are interested in pursuing careers in asset management and maintenance. Graduates are employed by major industries involved in oil and gas and in companies such as PDO, Oman Oil Company and Oman LNG. Opportunities for senior maintenance manager jobs are also available in mining, civil, transportation, chemical and automobile industries.

Module Details

Project Planning & Management: This module aims to develop in the student, the ability to:

  • Select, develop and plan an MSc research project;
  • To research and critically analyse the literature associated with the project;
  • To present research findings effectively;
  • Apply a competent process of thinking to all aspects of the project. \ In addition, the module aims to give the student an appreciation of the relationship between these skills and those associated with industrial project management.

Strategy & Innovation: This module aims to develop students’ ability to evaluate and explore concepts and applications of strategy and innovation related to organisational dynamics, global markets, change management and disruptive technologies.

Maintenance Management : This module aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to the theory and practice of reliability centred maintenance and total productive maintenance strategies.  Maintenance has to respond to the increasing pressure to achieve high plant availability and the growing awareness of its effect on product quality, safety and environmental issues.  This module examines the main methods for developing a modern maintenance programme for industrial plants.

Non-Destructive Testing Methodology: This module aims to provide the student with an understanding of the basic principles of non-destructive testing and the methods of non-destructive testing in current use in industry.  It equips the student with the knowledge to be able to decide on the most appropriate method of testing for a particular defect in a component considering the material from which the component has been manufactured.

Energy Audit & Energy Asset Management: This module focuses on techniques for auditing and managing the amount of energy used in a range of industrial processes.  The module provides an understanding of the strategies and procedures of energy audit and energy asset management.  Using case studies throughout, the module presents energy audit, managing energy usage, factors affecting energy efficiency on plants, and the cost benefit analysis of introducing alternative strategies and technologies.  The module also addresses the efficient use of other commodities, for example water consumption.

Reliability and Availability Assessment: The module aims to provide an understanding of the fundamentals of reliability and decision theory.  It will examine these techniques as applied to risk, availability and maintenance management.  It will also bridge the gap between the rather theoretical subject of “Reliability Engineering” (RE) and day-to-day equipment maintenance practice.  In addition, techniques will be considered to analyse field data for reporting on business targets.  Apart from these quantitative approaches, attention will be paid to a variety of formal, qualitative risk identification and maintenance optimisation methods used in industry.

Condition Monitoring: This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the machine health monitoring and requirements of successful condition monitoring based on popular systems commercially available.  The application of ‘Artificial Intelligence’ and ‘Neural Networks’ to assist with data analysis is also introduced in some depth.  Case studies examine commercial problems encountered and the benefits this technology has to offer in terms of cost savings and safety.

Ethics, Safety and Safety Management: The aim of this module is to provide students with a good grounding in the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act, and regulations made under it.  Also included under this is a comparison with international safety systems, an understanding of the principles applicable to the safe design and operation of plant and equipment and safe operation in the workplace environment, an understanding of the need for short-term and long-term planning to minimise damage resulting from a major plant or workplace safety failure and an understanding of ethical working and codes of ethical conduct.

MSc Project: he project acts as a vehicle for extending the knowledge and understanding of the student towards the technical community in some specialist area.  It serves, through its length, complexity and rigour, as a suitable vehicle for extending, in the student, a range of personal, interpersonal and communication skills.  Projects are industrially-based and allow each student to develop educationally as an individual by selecting, studying, analysing and evaluating in depth some problem or area of maintenance management.

Learning and Teaching Methods

A variety of teaching and learning strategies are applied on the programme appropriate to the subject and objectives involved.  Throughout the programme students will be taught using a variety of teaching methods including:

  • Formal lectures and tutorials
  • Discursive seminars in a group context
  • Specialised guest lectures
  • Practical sessions
  • Directed reading
  • Case studies
  • Computer-based learning

Assessment Methods

Seven out of eight taught modules are assessed by a combination of examination and coursework.  The final mark is determined by weighted average of the two elements.  The weightings applied are 70% for examination and 30% for coursework.  The Project Planning & Management module is assessed by coursework alone.

The MSc Project is assessed by dissertation and oral presentation.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally have ONE of the following:

  • An Honours degree from a UK University in a mechanical engineering subject or an equivalent qualification from an overseas institution.
  • For mature candidates, equivalence to an Honours degree may be demonstrated through the university’s procedures for the Recognition of Prior Informal Learning (RPL).

International Students

International students whose first language is not English shall normally be required to demonstrate evidence of satisfactory competence by holding one of the following qualifications:

    • IELTS test with a score of band 6
    • TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 (213 for computer based test)
