The MSc Construction Management programme is designed to impart with the knowledge and skills that modern construction professionals need in order to meet the growing challenge of sustainable construction methods and innovative management practice.

Entry Requirements

  • BSc (Hons) Degree in Quantity Surveying or equivalent

  • BSc (Hons) Degree in Building Surveying

  • BSc (Hons) Degree in Construction Engineering or equivalent

  • BSc (Hons) Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent

  • BSc (Hons) Degree in Measurement & Cost Engineering or equivalent
  • BArch (Hons) Degree in Architecture or equivalent

with the above normally obtained  with a minimum of a 2nd class honours or GPA equivalent.

For applicants whose first language is not English, a  minimum IELTS score of  6.0 (with a minimum of  no less than 5.5 in  each element) OR a minimum TOEFL rating of 550 OR an equivalent qualification is  required to demonstrate competence in the English language.

Graduates of Caledonian College of Engineering who have completed a degree which is delivered and assessed in English and awarded by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), are exempt from the above requirement and are normally granted entry on satisfactory completion of the pre-entry English course for postgraduate entry provided by the College.

Duration

This programme is designed to be taken in flexible mode to suit both fresh graduates and working professionals.

  • On successful completion of 180 credits the candidate will be awarded an MSc in Construction Management, by Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, UK.
  • On successful completion of 120 credits the candidate will be awarded Pg Diploma in Construction Management, by Glasgow Caledonian University, UK.

Module Details

Construction Economics and Procurement: This module aims to develop skills for preparing simple forecast of future construction work using economic models and to analyze and evaluate the impact of such forecast on the construction and materials sectors. Student will be able to prepare an economic intelligence report on issues affecting the construction industry in the region and internationally.

Construction Management: The module introduces the student to the key concepts in Construction and Property projects and enterprise management. Further, it helps to consolidate knowledge and concepts, including current management thinking, the planning and control of construction projects, management of sub contractors and laborers , the factors affecting productivity and the management of Information applicable within the management of construction and construction projects.

The Management of Health and Safety and the Environment: This module reviews the Health and Safety legislative framework within which construction and engineering projects are carried out with an emphasis on risk management. The module reviews hazardous processes and management in order to control these risks. The student is also introduced to the topic of health surveillance schemes. Further it provides input to Safety Management Systems with introduction of topics like training, behavioral safety and safety culture in addition to recognized management Safety Management Systems such as BS800 and international accredited Safety Management Systems (OHSAS 18001).

Sustainable Design and Construction: The module will provide students with knowledge and understanding of the principles of sustainable design and construction and introduce the main requirements, technologies, tools, methods, processes and systems required to develop a sustainable building. The module will be underpinned by consideration of lifecycle thinking, management techniques and also the technological aspects related to design, build, operate, maintain and dispose of buildings and their support systems.

Construction Financial Management: This module covers all aspects of the financial management of construction companies and projects with particular attention to capital investment decisions and cash flow management.

Project Management: The module will cover topics of project management concepts; the roles and responsibilities of project managers; project plan development; project plan execution; integrated change control; project initiation and scope planning; scope definition, verification and change control; project time management - activity definition and sequencing; estimating activity duration and schedule development and control. Further the module introduces topics like project communications management ‘project reporting and Earned Value Analysis (EVA); project methodologies; risk management; project teams; project leadership; network analysis; computer aided project planning; and learning from projects and managing project knowledge etc

Strategic Management in Construction and Property: The module develops insight into the strategic decision-making processes necessary for organisations to establish and meet organisational goals. It also examines the types of strategies and how they may be successfully utilized. This module will help the students in developing knowledge in contemporary analytical techniques, factors which influence Corporate Strategy in relation to the construction and property industry and constituent enterprises.

Elective: The student can choose any one elective course based on the specialization and interest and dependent upon availability:

  2. Development & Project Economics
  3. Construction Contracts & Disputes
  4. International Construction Project Finance

Dissertation: The module requires the student to produce a conference style paper and a Dissertation relevant to their chosen specialism. Dissertations must demonstrate clearly the widest possible use of academic literature relevant to the chosen topic and the ability to apply academic and, where appropriate, comparative insights to the analysis of issues. Dissertations must also show an understanding of research methodology, information gathering and analysis.
