1. Condition Monitoring & Maintenance Managemen

tCondition Monitoring and machine fault diagnosis is one of the strongest areas of research expertise available in the college. Industry projects on maintenance management are undertaken.   8 PhDs are awarded in this area research and featured by more than 30 publications in peer reviewed journals.

2. RELIABILITY MODELING AND ANALYSIS

The group has worked on projects like, desalination plants, large crane operations at port and has optimized the plants/ systems/operation cost and developed Reliability Models.. The group has been able to publish several publications in peer reviewed journals.

3. WASTE TREATMENT AND WASTE MANAGEMENT

The research is mainly carried out in developing biological process for treatment of domestic and industrial waste water and solid waste management. The research expertise is currently developing anaerobic co-digestion system for market waste and a source of energy. INRA-LBE France is one of the partners in the current research.

4. DESALINATION & WASTE WATER TREATMENT

The use of renewable solar energy, which is abundant in Oman for purification of wastewater and in desalination, is one of the objectives. Organic compounds; heavy metals and microorganisms, can be degraded by photo oxidation under the influence of ultra violet solar radiation in association with nano-photo catalysts. Research interest on pre-treatment, nano-technology application performance analysis, dynamic modulation for energy optimization in desalination and treatment of water.

6. REFRIGERATION AND THERMAL ENGINEERING

Energy consumption for cooling applications in Oman region is increasing considerably and a major portion of the total energy production is utilized for it. Using renewable energy sources as well as combining electrical power, heat and cooling can considerably reduce the energy consumption for cooling and refrigeration. 9. CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY, INNOVATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS & STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING:

A) CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY: Concrete in its various forms is the most widely used construction material. Performance factor has attracted the engineer’s attention all over the world. The advent of micro-fillers, micro-reinforcements and polymers has triggered a revolutionary change in concrete technology. Innovative concrete and cement composites have been developed and promoted as the ultimate solution to long-standing performance problems.

B) STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING: Inelastic random earthquake response and reliability of ductile frames mixed with brittle elements, seismic analysis of structures, design of high rise buildings against earthquake and wind, seismic design codes, seismic evaluation of existing structures, seismic strengthening of existing buildings. In particular, the group conducts research on nonlinear behavior of structures under seismic loads, pushover (nonlinear static) analysis of RC structures, and performance based design of structures.

C) INNOVATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS: This research will look to prove that Eco-materials are viable for certain projects and those they should be used more often. It will show the types of projects that they should be used for and give commercial justifications as well as the environmental impact. This is important because builders will not incorporate sustainable products if they are not cheaper or have other advantages relating to the project.

10. WATER RESOURCES MANAGEMENT, DESALINATION, SUBSURFACE AND SURFACE DRAINAGE:

Water in Middle East faces high and growing pressures from irrigation, the resources sector, urban demand and water for the environment. My experience in this area and in this region will enhance my research capability in addressing the critical issues regarding water resources management

The Integrated Water Resources Management Theme addresses the issues of how to manage rural water resources in an integrated way to better meet the needs of all users. Aflaj water system is an important integral water resources system in Oman and many countries in the region;

11. COASTAL ENGINEERING

Oman is popular for Wadis, deserts, beaches, and mountains, which make Oman unique among its neighboring nations with a coastline of 1700 km. The environmental stress on the coastal zone is rapidly growing and there is a need to protect the coastal environment. The development of structures to provide protection against the destructive forces of the sea waves and to withstand the action of waves has been the constant challenge to coastal engineers.

12. MANUFACTURING, MATERIALS, OPTIMIZATION METHODS AND CAD/CAM

This core research group pays attention heavily towards identifying industry based problems in the competitive areas and subsequently provides feasible and cost effective solutions to either improve the process efficiency or enhance productivity / throughput values using CAD/CAM, simulation software and optimisation tools.

14. COMPONENT BASED SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT

Component Based Software Development is based on the idea that software systems can be developed by selecting appropriate Commercial-Off-The-Shelf components and then assembling them with well-defined software architecture. This approach is used to reduce software development costs, assemble systems rapidly and reduce the maintenance burden associated with the support and upgrade of large systems.

15. BEHAVIORAL MODELING OF RF AND MICROWAVE CIRCUITS, FOR WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS APPLICATIONS.

Research focuses on developing modeling and simulation techniques for nonlinear systems in order to evaluate the performance of 3G-4G wireless communication systems. This involves development of performance measures of wireless systems which are affected by nonlinear distortion caused by nonlinear amplification and development of compensation methods for enhancing the performance of wireless systems.

17. NEURO-FUZZY AUTOMATED SEGMENTATION MEDICAL IMAGES

Research focuses on Medical imaging and computing which unleashes the modern imaging technologies that are indispensable for the diagnosis, treatment and for pre and post-surgical planning of most disease processes. This involves development of computational and mathematical methods for solving problems pertaining to medical images and their use for biomedical research and clinical care. The research explores on optimization techniques with evolutionary algorithms for better performance, integrating soft computing techniques such as fuzzy systems, neural networks and further hybrid algorithms.
