Engineering a vision into a reality
 

Travel any highway or cross any bridge, walk into a building or shop in a mall and the reality of construction engineering becomes immediately apparent. Architects envision exciting designs, but it is the challenge of construction engineering to make those visions concrete. This involves a set of practical and intellectual skills and a strong team-working ethos.

Programme

To cater for the national and international demand for skilled human resources within the construction industry, this programme has been designed to provide you with a strong knowledge and understanding of your subject, complemented with intellectual, professional, practical and transferable skills associated with construction engineering. Areas covered in the programme include construction techniques, heavy construction equipment’s and machinery, building services, restoration & rehabilitation, contract administration, risk analysis and management of new and existing structures that covers small projects to mega structures like sky scrapers, roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, airports, dams and shopping malls. Apart from this programme is blended with design modules such as design of concrete & steel structures.

Placement

Placement opportunities are provided in companies involved in building projects such as industrial projects, housing complexes, business centres, shopping malls, bridges, roads, railways, harbours, dams and airports.

Career Opportunities

A broad range of career options in Oman and abroad exist in the public and private sectors with construction engineering contractors, health, safety and environment consultants, project risk analyst and in national and local government agencies in areas including water supply, sewerage, road and bridge design and maintenance, building regulations, compliance and assessment of building services by laboratory analysis.

Awards

This programme will be eligible for an internationally recognised Honours Degree awarded by Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland, UK. Two exit options are available as given below:

  • On successful completion of Level 2: Award of University Diploma
  • On successful completion of Level 4: Award of BEng Honours Degree

The Diploma awarded after Level 2 is equivalent to Diploma (Oman) and BEng Honours Degree awarded after Level 4 is equivalent to Bachelor Degree in Engineering (Oman), conforming to the Oman Qualifications Framework..

Credits Level 1 – Total of 140 Credits
20 Applicable Mathematics IThe module provides grounding in a range of mathematical topics including expansion of binomial, polynomial equations and inequalities, partial fractions, vector algebra, Cartesian components, trigonometry, introduction to co-ordinate geometry, differential and integral calculus. Applications of the mathematics are considered whenever appropriate.
20 Technical Communication This module is aimed at providing students with skills needed to critically analyse, assess and present a technical or a non-technical situation both at group discussions and in writing. The focus is on strengthening students’ ability in technical writing and expressing/ describing the case or situation effectively. Students will learn taking responsibilities and roles in researching and distributing roles to fellow students in the group. Students will be able to demonstrate effective communication using oral, written and electronic methods and give effective presentations.
20 Construction Materials and MeasurementsThis module introduces commonly used construction materials covering their properties and engineering applications. Further it provides standard methods of measurement and elementary measurement techniques with an introduction to relevant quantity measurement using KATO estimation software.
10 Materials  and Measurements LaboratoryThe laboratory Module is designed to offer an equal measure of practical orientation to the student on the physical characteristics of construction materials and the measurement methods used in quantity surveying.
20 Construction TechnologyAim of this module is to gain knowledge and understanding of the construction of the low-rise domestic buildings including the service provisions
20 Environmental SciencesThe aim of the module is to provide basic knowledge on environment, natural resources, sustainable development and ecosystems. The objective is to understand the mechanisms of various types of pollution create awareness on global environmental issues and preventive measures to control pollution and protecting the environment.
20 Engineering MechanicsThe aim of this module is to provide a basic knowledge of fundamental concepts and techniques of solid engineering mechanics including statics and basic Dynamics and the importance of application of these basic structural analysis methods in solving engineering design problems.
10 Engineering Drawing LaboratoryThis module aims to build on the work of Level 1 and extend those aspects of Mathematics required in this and later stages of the degree programme. The module also provides grounding in those aspects of Calculus required in this and later stages of the degree programme.

Credits Level 2– Total of 140 Credits
20 Applicable Mathematics IIThis module aims to build on the work of Level 1 and extend those aspects of Mathematics required in this and later stages of the degree programme. The module also provides grounding in those aspects of Calculus required in this and later stages of the degree programme.
20 Design of RCC StructuresThe aim of this module is to provide a knowledge and understanding of the analysis and design of Reinforced concrete structural elements based on the current British standards specifications and hence to introduce to the topics contained, In this module, the structural analysis and structural design of Reinforced Concrete structural elements will be explained.
20 SurveyingThe aim of this module is to allow the student to gain knowledge and understand methods used in field Surveying, quantities of area and volume, cut and fill, transfer the land profile on to a sheet, angle measurements, latitude and departures, setting out curves and buildings and finally building monitoring in the field.
10 Surveying LaboratoryThe aim of this module is to allow the student to transfer surveying technologies on surveying practice with the consequent need to keep abreast of such changes and to gain experience in the construction engineering field work.
20 Engineering Economics for Construction EngineersThe module has been designed to illustrate the application of Economic principles to the building and construction process, Providing an overview of the construction industry and its role in the economy, Understanding a construction firm and its management from an economic perspective, A comparative performance of the Oman construction and property markets, Valuation of land and property including the preparation of a developer's budget and Applications of cost planning and cost control techniques in pre-contract project cost are also included.
20 Building Performance and ServicesThe main aims of this module is to provide experience in the evaluation of building internal environment and the effect of building services design solutions, Introduce the principles and expose students to the practice of engineering services design for buildings, Develop understanding of current and emerging industry approaches to improve building performance against the criteria of comfort, productivity and energy efficiency.
20 Employability Skills DevelopmentThe module aims to develop students’ skill to enter, stay in and progress in their workplace through mastering job search and career enhancement skills. This module aims to enhance students self-marketing and self-presentation skills through their resume, elevator speech or personal commercial, individual and group presentation, and job interviews through simulation and role plays. Through this module students develop an understanding of professionalism and professional ethics and practices which will be tackled through debates and group discussions and will encourage high standards of critical thinking and reflection.
10 Building Performance LaboratoryThe aim of this module is to gain a knowledge and understanding of the primary thermal and physical aspects of the performance of the buildings, providing interior comfort t of the buildings and to study the performance of the parameters like Heat, Light, sound and Air quality.

20 Entrepreneurial Skills developmentThe primary focus of this module is to bring forth entrepreneurial leaders in Oman who will eventually contribute to the country’s economy. The mission is to create a culture of ‘entrepreneurship’ focused on developing creative & innovative activities, growth of new business venture and Self-employment. The course is so designed to meet the challenges of the growing economic needs of Oman and provide a platform for engineering students to showcase their entrepreneurial and managerial skills learned / developed during the course. The module addresses Oman’s Vision 2020 and aims at providing opportunities for students to develop entrepreneurial mindsets and skills as well as relevant ‘soft’ skills.
20 Heavy Construction Equipment and MachineryThis module primarily aims to inculcate the technical and engineering skills in the planning, selection and utilisation of construction and demolition (C&D) equipment and machineries. The objectives include developing the technical and engineering skills in the selection and planning of the construction equipment depending on the construction process; the utilisation of the equipment to produce the intended quality in the most cost effective manner. The student is expected to know the utilisation of equipment in various construction processes.
20 Design of Steel StructuresThe aim is to provide the student the knowledge and understanding of the design of steel structures based on the British standard specifications. In this module, structural analysis and structural design of steel structural elements will be explained. This module also gives an insight into the way in which the structural elements function, the work of each structural component and their performance when they are assembled to form a structure. Further, Plastic analysis of structures will also be explained which is the basis for the development of Limit State Design of steel structures in understanding the load carrying mechanism of steel structural elements.
10 Structural Detailing (RCC and Steel drawing)This module provides an understanding of structural details, preparation and interpretation of drawing of RC details and structural steel details drawings of beams, columns and connections.
20 Health and Safety in ConstructionThe aim of this module is to introduce the students to the health, safety and environmental issues relevant to the construction and demolition work of buildings. The knowledge and understanding about the measures to control the risks or to prevent the accidents at different types of construction work and different phases of construction are also to be gained.
20 Construction Cost EstimatingThe module has been designed to illustrate the application of principles and techniques involved in the estimation of construction cost, the importance of NRM-2 Code for measurement of building works, Estimating mechanical and electrical items of works and Estimating construction cost of heavy constructions.
20 Geotechnical Engineering The module contents emphasize the application of the principles of geotechnical engineering in order to classify the soil. Methods of determination of shear strength, permeability, consolidation settlements of soil are also dealt with in the module. Concepts of bearing capacity, analysis of pressure distribution in a soil mass, foundation settlement also forms part of the module.
10 Industrial TrainingAim of the module is to have an industrial experience that evolves the student to be a professional engineer. Demonstrate an understanding of social, cultural, and environmental responsibilities of a professional engineer.

20 Contract Administration and Building RegulationsThe module will provide an overall idea about the impact of delay and the disputes likely to arise due to delay in the construction projects and the role of arbitrators, the need for preparing detailed project specific documentation, etc. This module will also provide the knowledge of developing the project team approach, and the methods of avoidance of claims the reduce claims losses. The module will also provide information on how to meet the particular needs of the project team in today‘s changing construction environment.
20 Project ManagementThis is an advanced module which covers such areas as the concept of project management, the roles and responsibilities of project managers, organizational structures within which project management operates, project implementation, project teams, project leadership, project communication, relationships with clients, users and funding bodies, computer aided project planning, relationships between Time, Cost and Quality, risks of project time and cost overrun.
10 Research MethodologyThis module provides the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out effective research work that forms the basis underpinning the Level 4 project. This module aims to introduce the research methodology topics, considering the research process, Research design, Data collection, Data Analysis techniques, Literature review, consideration of ethical and environmental issues. Also it aims to help in identifying a project title and carry on with the research leading to completion of a critical analysis and pre-design of the project. Working through the topics of the module will provide an insight of research methodologies and prepare the student for taking up the ‘Project’ module of the following semester.
20 Advanced Construction TechnologyThe aim of this module is to provide knowledge of different heavy construction equipment’s handling, maintenance and operations and the safety and ethics involved in the operations. Apply information from site visits related to site works, concrete works, earth moving equipment, and formworks. Explain components of bridges and the methods of construction. Identify equipment used in construction industry, and economic use of them. Explain heavy construction and earth moving equipment’s.
20 Rehabilitation of StructuresThe aim of this module is to gain knowledge and understanding of various types of problems in buildings and to identify repair/ maintenance techniques to be adopted. Understand and develop different aspects of inspection, procedures for assessing a damaged structure, extent of damage caused, repair and rehabilitation construction techniques
20 ProjectThis module develops and integrates the Research methodology and Industry based project and the skills gained from other modules from the previous levels of study. The work carried out in Research Methodology will form the basis of this individual project. The project consists of elements of design, analysis, specification, implementation, validation (testing) and communication.
10 Industry Based Project This module provides the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out Industry based project work. It provides greater assistance for taking up the ‘Project’ module of the following semester. The critical study report, to be submitted as a part of continuous assessment, will provide input to the ‘project’ to be chosen in the following semester.
20 ElectiveThis subject covers the various sources and characterisation of municipal solid wastes and the on-site/off-site processing of the waste, and the disposal methods. The student is expected to know about the various effects and disposal options for the municipal solid waste.
