BEng Chemical Engineering

Turning concepts into reality

Caledonian College of Engineering (CCE) has a history of offering high quality chemical engineering programmes. Formerly offered through VIT University in India, this programme is now being run in collaboration with the University of South Carolina in the USA. CCE’s new ABET-compliant Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) programme in chemical engineering has a strong practical dimension that will help students of the programme be work-ready on graduation.

The Field of Chemical Engineering

This discipline occupies a unique position at the interface between molecular sciences and engineering. Closely linked with the fundamental subjects of chemistry, mathematics and physics, and in immediate collaboration with fellow engineering disciplines such as mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering, materials science and computer science, chemical engineering makes an unparalleled contribution in new and emerging technologies. Chemical engineers are involved in nanotechnology and the production of renewable fuels, and they work progressively at the boundary between engineering and the life sciences. The BEng Chemical Engineering programme offered at CCE has been contextualised for the needs of industry in the Sultanate of Oman and in GCC countries while retaining compliance with the requirements of ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). 

The BEng in Chemical Engineering at CCE

The BEng Chemical Engineering programme at CCE is offered through affiliation with the University of South Carolina, USA. The programme equips graduates with core scientific and engineering knowledge together with hands-on experience through practical work. Graduates of this programme will be able to help develop innovative solutions and new products that will address today’s challenges and tomorrow’s needs in the chemical engineering field. Team working, problem solving and other transferable skills are also developed through this programme in recognition of the importance of these skills in the workplace.

Programme Resources and Professional Interaction

CCE is renowned for its well-equipped laboratories which house modern facilities. The use of modern computational tools and computer simulation programs are included in the delivery of teaching and learning, while also offering opportunities for advanced research. Students have the opportunity to enroll with international professional bodies such as The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE).

Placement and Exposure to Industry

The programme is structured around industrial visits, mandatory credited internships, dedicated laboratory sessions and placement opportunities.  CCE’s placement cell plays an active role in helping students explore the different career pathways they can undertake while professional development modules ensure graduates develop the communication and leadership skills that will enable them to contribute meaningfully to a wide variety of positions in industry.


Students of the Chemical Engineering Programme are taught to be competent in the design and operation of chemical products and processes.  In addition, embedded into the study of any BEng degree at CCE is the understanding that students need to be ready to “hit the ground running” when they reach the workplace. To ensure that graduates have the necessary employment skills, students of all programmes receive professional development modules that cover a range of essential soft skills required by employers and a mandatory industrial internship module is included in the curriculum to provide first-hand experience of the work place.


Students who successfully complete the Chemical Engineering Programme from CCE are eligible for an internationally recognised Bachelor of Engineering Degree awarded by Caledonian College of Engineering in collaboration with the University of South Carolina, USA.

Employment and Entrepreneurial Opportunities

The BEng Chemical Engineering Programme at CCE equips graduates for employment in oil and petrochemical industries; desalination, fossil fuel and renewable energy plants; mineral processing; semiconductors; environmental control, nanotechnology, water and wastewater treatment; polymer and plastics industries; food and consumer products; pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. The programme encourages entrepreneurship and students complete Capstone Design Projects that are centred on solving problems in industry with an emphasis on innovation. With this experience, graduates can consider setting up their own enterprises or consultancies, or entering careers focused on research, or on the design and development of new processes and products; on the improvement of existing processes and reduction of manufacturing costs, as well as on the management of corporate assets.

Graduate Studies

Students with high scholastic attainment are well prepared to enter graduate programmes leading to advanced degrees in chemical engineering or in related professional, scientific, and engineering fields.

About CCE’s Affiliate: the University of South Carolina

The University of South Carolina, founded in 1801, offers more than 350 programmes of study, leading to bachelor, master, and doctoral degrees, and educates more than 30,000 students.  One of the oldest and most comprehensive public institutions of higher education in the USA, the University of South Carolina occupies a 360-acre campus in the state capital of Columbia. The Columbia campus is divided into 15 different schools and colleges, each reflecting different areas of research and educational expertise. USC has seven satellite campuses, which offer a range of degrees and qualifications. It also runs an innovation district called Innovista, looking to commercialise research in key areas of strength such as biomedicine, nanotechnology, environmental science and alternative fuels. The chemical engineering programme offered at USC is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
